# Can I Change a Package Delivery Address, Reroute It, Hold It, or Intercept It?

A package can sometimes be redirected, held, rescheduled, corrected, or intercepted, but these are different actions. The exact option shown in the carrier’s official tracking or delivery-management tool controls what is available for that shipment. Recipients may receive delivery-instruction, pickup, date-change, or limited reroute tools; senders and carrier account holders usually have stronger authority for intercept, return, or a full destination change.

Options can disappear after **Out for Delivery**, be blocked by the shipper, require identity verification, or cost extra. Submitting a request, authorizing a fee, or receiving a case number does not prove that the parcel was changed. Wait for a later carrier event such as **Redirected**, **Held at Location**, a revised delivery date, movement toward a new facility, or **Available for Pickup**.

Use only the carrier’s official site or app. There is no universal eligibility rule, cutoff, fee, or guarantee.

## Fast action classifier

| What you need | What the action usually means | Likely requester | What proves progress |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave it somewhere at the same address | Delivery instruction or preference | Recipient | Instruction accepted, then a compatible delivery event |
| Add an apartment, suite, floor, code, or ZIP/postal detail | Minor address correction | Recipient or sender, depending on carrier | Corrected-address or renewed movement event |
| Send it to a different residence or business | Full destination change or reroute | Often sender; recipient only when the carrier offers it | New destination or facility event |
| Send it to a carrier location, post office, access point, service point, locker, or retail partner | Hold for pickup or redirect to pickup | Recipient or sender, depending on tool | **Available for Pickup** at the named location |
| Change the delivery day or time | Reschedule or future delivery | Recipient or sender | Revised delivery date or time window |
| Pause eligible home deliveries while away | Vacation hold or address-level hold | Authenticated recipient | Hold activation and later resume date |
| Try delivery again after an unsuccessful attempt | Redelivery | Recipient or authorized party | Prepared for redelivery or another route event |
| Stop, return, redirect, or hold the shipment before delivery | Intercept | Sender, shipper, or account holder | Intercept processed and a changed route |
| Forward mail after moving | Permanent forwarding or change of address | Address resident or postal customer | Postal forwarding record—not a one-parcel reroute guarantee |

Do not use **Hold Mail**, vacation hold, permanent forwarding, redelivery, and Hold for Pickup as interchangeable terms.

## What each action means

### Delivery instruction

A request about where or how to deliver at the original destination—for example, front door, side entrance, reception, neighbor, or another safe eligible location.

It normally does not change the destination address. Safety, access, signature, shipper restrictions, and driver discretion may override the request.

### Minor address correction

A limited change that identifies the same destination more accurately, such as an apartment number, suite, floor, building code, postal code, or spelling correction.

A carrier that accepts a limited correction may still refuse a new city, state, province, country, or unrelated residence.

### Full destination change or reroute

A request to deliver to a materially different address. This creates greater fraud and contractual risk, so it is often sender-controlled, account-controlled, authenticated, paid, or unavailable.

### Hold for pickup

A request to move or retain one eligible shipment at a named carrier facility, post office, access point, service point, locker, or retail partner.

A submitted hold request does not mean the parcel is ready. Wait until official tracking names the location and says the parcel is available.

### Delivery reschedule

A change to the expected delivery date or time without necessarily changing the destination.

The request itself can make the original delivery date disappear or move. Use the later official estimate rather than the old promise.

### Vacation hold

A temporary pause for eligible deliveries to an authenticated address. It can affect more than one shipment and differs from holding one parcel at a pickup location.

### Redelivery

Another attempt after delivery failed. Redelivery usually uses the original address unless the carrier displays a separate eligible change option.

### Intercept

A sender- or account-holder-controlled request to stop, return, redirect, hold, cancel, or reschedule a shipment before delivery.

Intercept is an attempt to acquire the parcel from the network. A submitted request is not proof that the carrier reached it in time.

## Who is allowed to request the change?

| Actor | Actions that may be available | Critical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient | Instructions, pickup, date change, vacation hold, limited correction, eligible reroute | Shipper, identity, service, contents, and shipment stage can block the option |
| Sender or shipper | Intercept, return, full reroute, future delivery, commercial redirection | Eligibility and operational success are still not guaranteed |
| Seller or merchant | Correct order before handoff, ask its contracted carrier, cancel or replace an order | Cannot create a carrier scan or force a completed reroute |
| Carrier | Displays eligibility, executes the action, assigns the pickup location, records completion | Support cannot necessarily override shipper or system restrictions |
| Pickup facility | Releases a parcel after readiness and verification | Cannot release a parcel that has not arrived or is not recorded ready |
| Marketplace | May control cancellation, seller communication, or buyer protection | Does not operate the carrier route |
| Tracking platform | Can explain public events and link to official tools | Cannot submit or authorize the change |

When the recipient option is missing, the sender or seller may be the correct next actor. Use [Who Should I Contact About a Package?](/delivery-actions/who-to-contact-about-a-package/) for cross-situation routing and [Official Carrier Support Directory](/carrier-support/) for verified channels.

## Shipment stage: when options can close

| Current stage | Most realistic action | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Order not shipped | Seller edits or cancels the order | Carrier may not have a usable shipment |
| **Label Created**, no possession | Sender cancels, corrects, or recreates the shipment | Recipient tools may not activate |
| Accepted, early transit | Best chance for eligible reroute, intercept, hold, or date change | Restrictions still apply |
| Near destination | Some options may remain | Less time to remove the parcel from its planned route |
| **Out for Delivery** | Few pre-delivery changes remain | Driver route is active |
| Delivery attempted | Redelivery, minor correction, or pickup may become available | Full destination change may be narrower |
| Held or **Available for Pickup** | Pickup and identity workflow | Pickup location may be fixed |
| **Delivered** | Pre-delivery change path has ended | Use delivery-recovery procedures |
| **Return to Sender** | Reverse movement is already underway | Seller or sender controls the order outcome |

Act when an eligible official option appears, but do not assume that an early request guarantees success.

## What proves the request succeeded?

| Evidence | What it confirms | What it does not confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Option appears | A request path is available | Submission or approval |
| Request submitted | Data entered the system | Operational completion |
| Fee authorized or reserved | Payment method was accepted | Reroute or intercept success |
| Email, case number, or confirmation page | Request was recorded | Carrier acquired the parcel from its route |
| **Change Processed** or similar event | Carrier accepted an operational change | Pickup readiness or final delivery |
| New destination or facility event | Route now reflects the change | Parcel is ready for release |
| **Available for Pickup** | Parcel is recorded ready at the named location | Release without required identity or authorization |
| **Delivered** or **Picked Up** | Carrier recorded a completed outcome | Personal receipt beyond what the record shows |

A request can still be processing even when the original address remains visible. It can also fail after submission. Use the newest official carrier event.

## USPS — United States

USPS uses three separate systems that should not be merged.

### USPS Delivery Instructions: recipient-facing

For eligible domestic shipments, the intended recipient may see **Delivery Instructions** in tracking.

Possible options can include:

- an eligible location at the original address;
- a neighbor on the same carrier route;
- Hold for Pickup at the local Post Office;
- another domestic address;
- another Post Office;
- a service upgrade or additional service.

Some options are free. An alternate address, alternate Post Office, added postage, or service upgrade can cost extra.

Important exclusions in the current official guidance include items that are:

- international;
- already **Out for Delivery**;
- already **Delivered**;
- required-signature;
- insured for $500 or more;
- under active Hold Mail, Hold for Pickup, or Package Intercept;
- temporarily forwarded;
- addressed in a way USPS considers invalid, insufficient, or undeliverable.

If the **Delivery Instructions** option is not displayed, the shipment is not currently eligible through that tool.

The current USPS FAQ says a submitted Delivery Instructions request cannot be canceled through that process.

- [USPS Delivery Instructions — The Basics](https://faq.usps.com/articles/FAQ/USPS-Delivery-Instructions-The-Basics)

### USPS Package Intercept: sender-facing

USPS Package Intercept is for the sender or an authorized representative, not a universal recipient tool.

For eligible domestic tracked mail before **Out for Delivery** or **Delivered**:

- a retail sender may request Return to Sender or Hold for Pickup;
- an eligible commercial sender may also request a new delivery address.

Interception is not guaranteed.

As reviewed on July 22, 2026, USPS lists a **$19.45 intercept fee plus applicable postage when the intercept succeeds**. The official page controls the current fee.

- [USPS Package Intercept](https://www.usps.com/manage/package-intercept.htm)

### USPS Redelivery: after an attempt

USPS Redelivery is a separate post-attempt action. It generally schedules another attempt to the original address.

Do not use Redelivery as if it were a full destination-change tool.

- [USPS Redelivery — The Basics](https://faq.usps.com/articles/Knowledge/Redelivery-The-Basics)

## UPS — United States

UPS separates recipient-facing delivery changes from sender-controlled Delivery Intercept.

### Recipient or guest delivery changes

The official UPS change-delivery page can allow a guest to request an action using a one-time passcode sent by email.

UPS My Choice may display eligible options such as:

- delivery-date change;
- pickup at a UPS location;
- hold or vacation-related options;
- neighbor delivery;
- delivery instructions;
- another address.

The exact displayed option controls availability.

Shipper restrictions, high-value contents, imports, service rules, and account status can remove options. **Delivery to Another Address** may require a fully authenticated UPS My Choice membership.

### Correct My Address

After an unsuccessful attempt, UPS may display **Correct My Address** for limited changes such as an apartment number or ZIP Code.

If that option is unavailable, UPS directs the user to the sender.

### UPS Delivery Intercept: sender-facing

Before delivery, an eligible sender can request:

- Return to Sender;
- Deliver to Another Address;
- Reschedule Delivery;
- Will Call.

UPS says fees may apply and are charged only if the intercept is completed. The live official tool controls eligibility and price.

- [UPS My Choice](https://www.ups.com/us/en/track/ups-my-choice)
- [UPS Delivery Intercept](https://www.ups.com/us/en/support/tracking-support/change-delivery-options/delivery-intercept)

## FedEx — United States

FedEx Delivery Manager is primarily a residential recipient tool. The shipper remains the party to the carriage contract and may restrict recipient options.

### Recipient options

Eligible shipments may display:

- delivery instructions;
- Hold at Location;
- redelivery;
- Vacation Hold;
- a specific delivery date or time;
- reroute to another residence.

Some options are free and some are paid. FedEx currently displays the applicable charge in its official tool. Because prices change, this page does not reproduce a full static fee table.

### Edit Delivery Address

The current workflow can create a delivery-address change case. FedEx warns that the change may affect the delivery date.

A case number confirms that the request was recorded. It does not prove that the parcel was rerouted.

### Hold at Location

An eligible parcel can be redirected to a FedEx or participating retail location.

Do not travel there until tracking says the parcel is ready at the named location.

Current FedEx pages do not support one universal public hold period: one page says up to seven days, while another gives different periods for standard and expedited shipments. Follow the exact shipment and location notice.

### Vacation Hold

FedEx currently describes a free Vacation Hold of up to 14 days for eligible FedEx Express and Ground residential deliveries.

### Important limitations

- shippers can restrict changes;
- residential enrollment or address verification may be required;
- signature, high-value, service, and shipment conditions can limit the action;
- delivery instructions can be subject to safety and driver discretion;
- the delivery date can change after a request.

## DHL Express versus DHL eCommerce

These divisions use different delivery-management models.

### DHL Express

DHL Express On Demand Delivery can display shipment-specific options such as:

- change the delivery date;
- alternate address;
- safe-place release;
- neighbor, concierge, or guard;
- collection from a Service Point or locker;
- vacation hold.

The U.S. On Demand Delivery page reviewed on July 22, 2026 describes a Vacation Hold of up to 30 days.

Availability depends on the country, shipment, shipper settings, and options shown in the live tool.

- [DHL Express On Demand Delivery](https://delivery.dhl.com/on-demand-delivery.xhtml?ctrycode=US)

### DHL eCommerce — United States

DHL eCommerce’s current U.S. consumer FAQ says it cannot change:

- the delivery address after the package leaves the merchant’s facility;
- the delivery day or time after dispatch.

It directs the recipient to the merchant or online shop.

Do not use DHL Express On Demand Delivery as proof that a DHL eCommerce shipment can be changed.

- [DHL eCommerce U.S. Tracking FAQ](https://www.dhl.com/us-en/home/customer-service/ecommerce-tracking-faq.html)

## Canada Post — Canada

Canada Post separates consumer delivery options from a commercial redirection service.

### Consumer shipments after mailing

Canada Post says the address generally cannot be changed or corrected after the item has been mailed.

FlexDelivery and **Deliver to Post Office** are pre-shipment addressing options. They are not ordinary recipient reroutes for an already moving parcel.

Once Canada Post places a parcel at a pickup location, the cited guidance says that location cannot be changed.

A delivery preference can influence eligible placement, but Canada Post may decline it because of safety, weather, access, or operational conditions.

### Commercial Package Redirection

Canada Post has a separate commercial Package Redirection tool.

Current requirements include:

- a Canada Post account;
- a linked commercial contract;
- an associated postal code;
- a package originating in Canada;
- a package still moving within Canada;
- shipment-specific eligibility.

As reviewed on July 22, 2026, Canada Post lists a **$13 fee per successfully redirected package plus applicable shipping fees**. Canada Post expressly does not guarantee successful redirection.

This commercial exception must not be presented as a normal consumer recipient tool.

## Purolator — Canada

Purolator’s official virtual assistant and customer-service routes can accept requests involving:

- address correction;
- redelivery;
- Hold for Pickup;
- shipment-address change;
- pause or hold questions.

Treat the interaction as a request or case until official tracking confirms the operational change.

The current public sources do not support one universal recipient-versus-sender rule, cutoff, fee, or success guarantee for every Purolator shipment.

- [Purolator Customer Service FAQ](https://www.purolator.com/en/faq-customer-service-services)

## La Poste / Colissimo — France

The official French consumer flow can offer eligible changes such as:

- another delivery date;
- a nearby post office or pickup point after a failed attempt;
- a new attempt;
- limited address-detail completion;
- a pickup-point change before the stated cutoff.

Options depend on the shipment type, sender permissions, notification, and timing.

Adding a building code, floor, or other missing detail is not the same as changing the parcel to an unrelated destination address.

## Fees, authentication, and pickup identity

A delivery change can involve:

- account login;
- one-time passcode;
- address verification;
- sender or account-holder authorization;
- extra postage;
- reroute or premium-date fee;
- pickup ID;
- authorization for another person;
- signature restrictions.

Do not assume a fee is always charged, always refundable, or proof of success.

At pickup, follow the exact official notice. A tracking number, government-issued ID, delivery notice, matching address, signature, or authorization may be required depending on the carrier, country, service, and location.

Do not send identity documents or one-time codes to an unknown support account.

## What to do if the option is missing

The missing option may mean:

- the carrier has not recorded possession;
- the shipment is too early or too late;
- it is already **Out for Delivery**;
- the shipper blocked changes;
- the service, contents, value, signature, import, or destination is ineligible;
- identity or account verification is incomplete;
- the carrier division uses a merchant-controlled process;
- the requested change is too large for a recipient correction.

Use this order:

1. Confirm the correct carrier and business unit.
2. Open the official tracking or delivery-management tool.
3. Check whether the parcel has item-level acceptance.
4. Identify whether you need a recipient request or sender intercept.
5. Contact the sender or seller when the recipient option is absent or restricted.
6. Protect seller, marketplace, travel, or return deadlines while waiting.

Use [Wrong Address or Address Information Required](/package-problems/wrong-address-or-address-information-required/) when the main problem is diagnosing the address mismatch.

## What to do while a request is pending

- Keep the request confirmation privately.
- Monitor the official carrier record.
- Do not assume the original destination changed until a later event supports it.
- Do not travel to a pickup point before **Available for Pickup** appears.
- Expect the delivery estimate to change.
- Keep the sender or seller informed when they control the shipment.
- Protect independent order and marketplace deadlines.
- Use the original address or post-attempt process only if the carrier confirms the requested change failed or became unavailable.

## What if the parcel is already Out for Delivery?

Many pre-delivery options close after **Out for Delivery**.

Do not assume a phone representative can override the operational cutoff. Monitor for:

- delivery;
- failed attempt;
- pickup assignment;
- address problem;
- return movement.

A failed attempt may open a new redelivery, correction, or pickup option.

## What if the parcel is already Delivered?

The delivery-change branch has ended.

Do not enter another property, take a parcel from a mailbox or secured area, or confront occupants, staff, or a driver.

Use [Delivered but Package Not Received](/package-problems/delivered-but-not-received/) and contact the delivering carrier plus the seller or marketplace as appropriate.

## What the request does not prove

A displayed button, submitted form, fee authorization, email, case number, support conversation, or revised estimate alone cannot establish:

- that the carrier removed the parcel from its original route;
- that the new address was validated;
- that the shipper approved the request;
- that the pickup location has the parcel;
- that the parcel is ready for release;
- that the revised date is final;
- that another person may pick it up;
- that the driver must follow a placement preference;
- that the fee will be refunded;
- that permanent forwarding will affect the shipment;
- that the carrier will return the package if the change fails;
- that the seller owes a refund;
- that a support agent can override the official system.

Use the newest official event as the evidence of operational progress.

## Protect your address, identity, and payment information

Address-correction, redelivery, pickup, and customs-fee messages are common phishing pretexts.

Do not use an unsolicited message link to change delivery or pay a fee. Open the carrier’s official site or app independently and locate the shipment there.

Do not post publicly or send to an unknown account:

- full tracking or order number;
- old or new address;
- shipping label;
- pickup notice;
- barcode or QR code;
- access code;
- one-time passcode;
- government ID;
- payment-card data;
- carrier account screenshot.

Use [Is This Delivery Text, Email, Fee, or Tracking Link Fake?](/package-problems/fake-delivery-message/) for the verification workflow.

## Monitor the carrier’s confirmation events

USTracking can help you save the shipment, organize available public tracking events, monitor for later carrier updates, receive notifications, and open official carrier links:

- [USTracking for iPhone and iPad](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ustracking-package-helper-ai/id6749468345)
- [USTracking for Android](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartaistudio.ustracking)

USTracking cannot edit an address, submit delivery instructions, authenticate the recipient, intercept or reroute a package, reserve a pickup location, reschedule delivery, pay a carrier fee, contact the seller or carrier, create a scan, or guarantee completion.
