# How to Find and Verify a Tracking Number

Look first in the merchant’s shipment details, shipping-confirmation email, official carrier notification, carrier account, receipt, or label copy. Do not confuse the **order number** with the **carrier tracking number**.

Copy the complete human-readable identifier exactly, including leading zeros and letters. A familiar prefix, matching length, or valid check digit can help identify a candidate or detect a typing error, but it does not prove the carrier, an active shipment, the correct order, or physical carrier possession.

Open the carrier’s official site or app independently and verify that the record matches the expected shipment. If the carrier recognizes only **Label Created**, **Shipment Information Received**, or electronic pre-advice, the number exists in the carrier system but physical possession is not yet confirmed.

Do not post the full number, barcode, QR code, label, address, order number, or delivery notice publicly.

## Fast identifier classifier

| What you have | What it usually identifies | Where it may work |
|---|---|---|
| Order number | Merchant purchase or transaction | Merchant or marketplace account |
| Merchant shipment ID | Fulfillment record | Merchant or fulfillment portal |
| Carrier tracking number | Carrier shipment record | Official carrier tracking |
| Waybill or air-waybill number | Transport document and shipment | Carrier tracking for the applicable service |
| Customer reference or purchase-order number | Shipper-supplied business reference | Carrier reference-search tool where supported |
| Door tag or delivery-notice number | Delivery attempt or notice | Carrier’s notice or tracking tool |
| International S10 number | International postal item identifier | Origin or destination postal tracking where supported |
| Original tracking number | Origin carrier or consolidator record | Origin carrier and sometimes destination carrier |
| Local tracking number | Destination or final-mile record | Local carrier |
| Return tracking number | Return shipment | Return carrier record |
| Barcode or QR code | Machine-readable shipment or workflow data | Official scanner, label, locker, return, or notice workflow |
| Customs or declaration number | Customs or import record | Customs or merchant system, not automatically carrier tracking |

```text
order number
≠
carrier tracking number
```

Some carriers can search by an order reference, purchase-order number, or notice number. That makes it an accepted alternate lookup key—not the carrier’s primary tracking number.

## Where to find the number

### If you are the recipient

Check in this order:

1. Merchant order page under **Shipment**, **Tracking**, **Carrier**, or **Fulfillment**.
2. Shipping-confirmation email.
3. Official carrier notification.
4. Marketplace shipment page.
5. Authenticated carrier account or app.
6. Sender or merchant support.

Be careful when the order page shows several nearby values:

- order number;
- invoice;
- merchant shipment ID;
- outbound tracking number;
- return tracking number;
- local carrier number;
- carrier reference.

### If you are the sender

Check:

1. Carrier receipt.
2. Shipping label or retained label copy.
3. Carrier shipping history.
4. Carrier account dashboard.
5. Manifest or bill of lading.
6. Shipment-confirmation email.
7. A private photograph of the complete label.

Do not rely on a spreadsheet cell that may have converted a long number to scientific notation or removed leading zeros.

## Tracking number, reference, waybill, notice, barcode, and local number

### Tracking number

The carrier-issued or carrier-recognized identifier used to retrieve the shipment record.

Carriers can call it:

- tracking number;
- tracking ID;
- shipment number;
- item number;
- parcel number;
- consignment number;
- PIN;
- waybill;
- air waybill.

The name alone does not identify the carrier division.

### Reference or purchase-order number

A shipper-created value such as:

- customer reference;
- purchase order;
- invoice;
- department code;
- project code.

FedEx and some other business tools can search eligible shipments by a reference or purchase-order number.

A reference can be reused, non-unique, restricted to an account, or unavailable to the recipient.

### Waybill or air-waybill number

A transport-document identifier that can also be the service’s tracking number.

DHL Express commonly uses a 10-digit AWB in current Express examples. FedEx’s current U.S. air-waybill guidance identifies a 12-digit tracking number.

These are scoped examples, not universal DHL or FedEx format rules.

### Door tag or delivery-notice number

A notice number is created after a delivery event or attempt.

Examples include:

- UPS Delivery Notice or InfoNotice;
- FedEx door tag;
- Canada Post Delivery Notice Card;
- La Poste *avis de passage*.

```text
notice number
≠
original tracking number
```

The official carrier tool may accept either one.

### Original and local tracking numbers

An international or multi-carrier shipment can have:

- an original origin-carrier number;
- a consolidator number;
- an international postal number;
- a local final-mile number.

The original number may continue to work. A local number may appear later, remain hidden, or never be assigned publicly.

Use [Find the Last-Mile Carrier and Local Tracking Number](/international-shipping/find-last-mile-carrier-and-local-tracking-number/) after a confirmed international handoff.

### Outbound and return numbers

A return label normally creates another shipment.

```text
outbound tracking number
≠
return tracking number
```

Select the movement you are trying to track.

### Barcode and QR code

A barcode can contain:

- the human-readable tracking number;
- a longer encoded string;
- additional application data;
- another operational identifier.

A QR code can open tracking, create a return, identify a locker transaction, or carry another workflow.

Use the printed human-readable number or the carrier’s official scanner. Do not assume every decoded barcode or QR payload is the number to type manually.

## Copy the identifier exactly

Before changing anything, preserve:

- every leading zero;
- every letter;
- every trailing country-code letter;
- every carrier-defined prefix;
- the full human-readable string.

Common transcription errors include:

- `0` versus `O`;
- `1` versus `I` or `L`;
- `2` versus `Z`;
- `5` versus `S`;
- `6` versus `G`;
- `8` versus `B`.

### Do leading zeros matter?

Yes. In the UPU S10 postal standard, the serial component is exactly eight digits and leading zeros are meaningful data.

Removing a leading zero creates a different identifier.

### Should spaces or punctuation be removed?

Follow the official carrier input rule.

Examples:

- La Poste currently says to enter accepted references in uppercase and without spaces.
- For one La Poste printable-stamp workflow, the displayed `SD:` label is not part of the number.
- FedEx’s `DT` door-tag prefix is meaningful.
- DHL’s multi-number input can treat spaces or punctuation as separators.

There is no safe universal rule to remove every letter, prefix, space, or symbol.

## How to identify the likely carrier

Use several signals together:

1. Merchant-stated carrier.
2. Carrier name or domain in the official shipping email.
3. Country and service context.
4. Identifier prefix and length.
5. Postal structure.
6. Official carrier format examples.
7. Whether the official carrier tool accepts the identifier type.

Treat an automatic carrier detector as a candidate generator.

```text
auto-detected carrier
=
most likely match under the detector’s rules
auto-detected carrier
≠
carrier confirmed
```

Formats overlap. One identifier can be compatible with several carriers or business units.

### Small set of current official format examples

| Carrier or standard | Current scoped example | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| UPS U.S. parcel | Many parcel numbers use `1Z` plus 16 more characters; UPS also publishes numeric and service-specific formats | Not every UPS identifier begins with `1Z` |
| FedEx U.S. door tag | `DT` plus 12 digits | Door tag is linked to the original shipment |
| DHL Express | Current Express examples commonly use a 10-digit AWB | Does not apply to all DHL divisions |
| Canada Post | Typically 11 or 13 alphanumeric characters ending in `CA`, or 16 digits | Some services use different formats |
| Royal Mail | Current reference range is 9–27 characters | A reference does not guarantee full journey tracking |
| UPU S10 | 13-character international postal structure | Not every valid S10 provides customer-facing tracking |

These are recognition clues, not proof.

## Verify the number in four levels

### Level 1: Verify the source

Prefer:

```text
carrier receipt or official carrier record
>
merchant shipment record
>
third-party tracking page
>
unsolicited message
```

A trustworthy source can still contain an error, but it is stronger than a number copied from an unknown message.

### Level 2: Verify the syntax

Check:

- characters;
- length;
- prefix;
- trailing letters;
- check digit where the standard uses one.

Syntax can expose transcription errors.

```text
format compatible
≠
shipment verified
```

### Level 3: Verify the official carrier record

Open the official carrier site independently and enter the exact identifier.

The record should be recognized by the expected carrier or division.

```text
official carrier recognizes number
≠
parcel physically received
```

### Level 4: Verify shipment context and possession

Confirm that the record is consistent with the expected shipment:

- carrier division;
- shipment date range;
- origin country or broad region;
- destination country or broad area;
- service;
- outbound or return movement;
- merchant or sender context;
- event sequence.

Then distinguish:

- **Label Created / Information Received / Pre-advice** — electronic shipment data;
- **Accepted / Received / Picked Up / Origin Facility / In Transit** — stronger item-level possession evidence.

A valid-looking number can still belong to another parcel, an old shipment, or the wrong order.

## What a valid-looking number does not prove

A familiar format, valid check digit, or official carrier record does not automatically establish:

- that the seller shipped the ordered item;
- that the number belongs to your order;
- that the address is correct;
- that the parcel contains the purchased goods;
- that the carrier physically received it;
- that the current message or link is legitimate;
- that a local tracking number exists;
- that delivery will occur;
- that the number has not been copied from another shipment.

Use safe contextual comparison inside the official tool. Do not publish the record.

## UPU S10 international postal numbers

The UPU S10 identifier has 13 characters.

Structural example only:

```text
AA000000000AA
```

| Position | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Characters 1–2 | Service indicator |
| Characters 3–10 | Eight-digit serial number |
| Character 11 | Check digit |
| Characters 12–13 | Country code of the UPU member under whose authority the identifier was issued |

### Leading zeros

The eight-digit serial can begin with zero. Preserve all eight digits.

### Check digit

The check digit helps detect many numeric transcription errors.

It does not prove:

- assignment;
- shipment activity;
- customer ownership;
- physical possession;
- authenticity.

### Final two letters

The final letters identify the member country under whose authority the identifier was issued.

They do not reliably prove:

- physical shipping origin;
- destination country;
- current carrier;
- final-mile carrier.

The UPU standard notes that an operator can issue numbers under its country code for extraterritorial operations. More than one operator can also exist under one country code.

### Not every S10 number gives customer tracking

The service indicator matters. The UPU standard says the `UA`–`UZ` range can support supply-chain identification for goods-bearing letter post without customer-oriented tracking.

```text
valid S10
≠
public end-to-end tracking guaranteed
```

A destination postal operator can continue using the S10 number or add another local identifier.

## USPS — United States

### Where to find it

USPS currently identifies sources such as:

- Post Office mailing receipt;
- eligible sales receipt;
- online label record;
- Click-N-Ship history;
- shipping-confirmation email;
- merchant notification;
- peel-off label;
- human-readable number below the barcode.

### If the number is lost

USPS says a lost tracking number cannot be recovered and that it cannot track or locate an item without the number.

Check the receipt, label record, merchant, sender, and saved account history.

Do not expect USPS to reconstruct the number from a name or address.

### Tracking availability

Not every USPS mail class or extra service provides the same tracking visibility.

A related Return Receipt number may identify the proof document rather than the original mailpiece.

- [USPS Tracking — The Basics](https://faq.usps.com/s/article/USPS-Tracking-The-Basics)

## UPS — United States

UPS publishes several parcel formats and also supports identifiers for selected:

- freight movements;
- Delivery Notice;
- Mail Innovations;
- USPS Delivery Confirmation linked to Mail Innovations;
- other service-specific records.

```text
does not begin with 1Z
≠
not UPS
```

But matching a UPS example does not confirm UPS ownership.

### If the recipient has no number

UPS directs the recipient to the sender.

An authenticated UPS My Choice account can display matching inbound shipments without manual number entry. That is an account-and-address matching feature, not a public name or address search.

### Delivery Notice

The official UPS Delivery Notice or InfoNotice number can be entered in the carrier tool. It is linked to the parcel but is not the original number.

### Privacy

UPS warns users not to disclose tracking numbers to unknown parties and warns about reference-number fraud.

- [UPS Fraud and Scam Guidance](https://www.ups.com/us/en/support/shipping-support/legal-terms-conditions/fight-fraud)

## FedEx — United States

FedEx supports several official lookup inputs:

- tracking number;
- reference number;
- purchase-order number;
- FedEx Office order number;
- door tag;
- Transportation Control Number for selected government shipments.

### Door tag

Current U.S. guidance uses:

```text
DT + 12 digits
```

The door tag is associated with the original tracking number and can be entered or scanned in the official tool.

### Air waybill

Current U.S. FedEx air-waybill guidance identifies a 12-digit tracking number on the waybill.

This is not the only FedEx identifier format.

### Barcode

The FedEx mobile app can scan the shipping-label barcode. FedEx technical material also distinguishes some longer barcode strings from the shorter tracking number.

Use the official scan function or printed number rather than manually guessing which part of the barcode payload to enter.

## DHL Express versus DHL eCommerce

### DHL Express

Check:

- shipping label;
- receipt;
- confirmation email;
- sender or retailer.

A current DHL Express example uses a 10-digit AWB.

Do not apply the Express format to every DHL shipment.

### DHL eCommerce

The merchant or online shop usually provides the tracking ID in the order page, confirmation email, or shipment notification.

DHL eCommerce says not every shipment has a customer tracking ID.

If no number is available, contact the merchant or shipper. Another reference may work only in the tracking tool of the correct DHL business unit.

DHL Express, DHL eCommerce, DHL Freight, and country-specific parcel businesses must remain separate.

## Canada Post — Canada

Canada Post publishes number locations across:

- online labels;
- receipts;
- counter labels;
- prepaid-envelope customer receipts;
- commercial labels;
- bills of lading;
- COD;
- international products;
- Registered Mail.

Current typical formats include:

- 11 or 13 alphanumeric characters ending in `CA`;
- 16 digits.

Some services differ, including the cited Priority Worldwide format.

### If the number is lost

Canada Post says it cannot disclose or search for a tracking number by sender or recipient name and address.

Check:

- merchant or sender email;
- sender;
- recent saved tracking under the current browser/account conditions;
- automatic tracking;
- account dashboard;
- app;
- receipt;
- label copy.

Tracking must have been included or purchased at shipping where required. It cannot be added afterward.

## La Poste / Colissimo — France

La Poste currently accepts:

- shipment or tracking number;
- delivery-notice number;
- international partner number.

The cited tracking tool says to enter the reference in uppercase and without spaces.

For one printable-stamp workflow, the displayed `SD:` marker is not part of the tracking number.

Current La Poste guidance says tracking remains accessible for 12 months after acceptance. This retention period is date-sensitive.

- [La Poste: Printable Stamp Tracking Number](https://aide.laposte.fr/contenu/ou-trouver-mon-numero-de-suivi-sur-un-timbre-a-imprimer)

## Royal Mail — United Kingdom

Royal Mail currently says the reference number:

- appears on the label or Post Office receipt;
- can contain 9–27 characters.

A recipient who was not given the reference should ask the sender whether a trackable service was used.

Royal Mail also distinguishes full journey tracking from services such as Signed For, which can provide delivery confirmation and signature without the same end-to-end event history.

## What to do if you have no number

| Situation | Best next source | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Online purchase | Merchant order page, shipping email, merchant support | Order ID is not automatically tracking |
| Sender kept receipt | Receipt, label copy, carrier account | Preserve the printed human-readable number |
| USPS number lost | Receipt, label, online record, sender or merchant | USPS says it cannot recover the lost number |
| UPS recipient has no number | Sender or authenticated My Choice | No public name/address lookup |
| FedEx has no primary number | Eligible reference, purchase order, door tag, FedEx Office order, sender | Not every reference works |
| DHL has no number | Shipper or merchant; correct DHL division | Not every eCommerce shipment has customer tracking |
| Canada Post number lost | Email, sender, saved entry, account/app, receipt, label | No lookup by name and address |
| La Poste missed delivery | Delivery notice or shipment number | Notice number is not the original number |
| Royal Mail recipient | Sender and service confirmation | Not every service provides full tracking |
| International handoff | Original carrier record and last-mile page | Local number is not guaranteed |
| Return shipment | Return label or merchant return page | Outbound number may not follow the return |

## What if the official tool returns no record?

First confirm that you have:

- the correct identifier type;
- every character;
- the correct carrier;
- the correct business unit;
- the correct outbound or return movement;
- the correct notice, reference, or partner field.

Then classify the result:

1. **Format rejected** — likely transcription, identifier-type, or carrier problem.
2. **No record** — the number may be inactive, wrong, expired, or in another division.
3. **Electronic data only** — the carrier has shipment information but no confirmed possession event.
4. **Item-level possession** — acceptance or movement is recorded.
5. **Handoff or local-number state** — another carrier or number may now matter.
6. **Delivered or archived** — proof and retention rules apply.

Use [Tracking Number Not Found](/package-problems/tracking-number-not-found/) after the exact number and correct official tool have been verified.

## Keep the number private

A tracking number can expose:

- shipment status;
- delivery timing;
- location wording;
- proof actions;
- delivery-management entry points;
- sender or recipient clues.

For screenshots or support discussions, hide:

- most of the tracking number;
- barcode;
- QR code;
- name;
- address;
- order number;
- reference;
- notice number;
- account information.

Covering the printed number is not enough if the barcode remains readable.

### Scam boundary

A fraudulent message can contain:

- a compatible-looking number;
- a copied real number;
- an old delivered number;
- another person’s shipment;
- a merchant reference with no carrier record.

Do not trust a link because the carrier logo or number format looks correct. Open the official carrier site independently.

Use [Is This Delivery Text, Email, Fee, or Tracking Link Fake?](/package-problems/fake-delivery-message/) for suspicious messages.

## Save the exact identifier once you have it

USTracking can help you save a tracking number as text, preserve leading zeros and letters, suggest likely carriers, organize original and local numbers that you already have, monitor public tracking updates, and open official carrier pages:

- [USTracking for iPhone and iPad](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ustracking-package-helper-ai/id6749468345)
- [USTracking for Android](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartaistudio.ustracking)

USTracking cannot recover a lost number from a name, address, email, merchant account, discarded receipt, hidden barcode, or private carrier database. It cannot guarantee the carrier from format, reveal an undisclosed local number, prove physical possession from syntax, authenticate a tracking message, or create tracking for an untracked service.
