Track an An Post item on this page
Use the carrier identifier supplied by:
- An Post;
- the sender or retailer;
- a Registered Post receipt;
- a Click & Post label;
- an international postal operator;
- the official An Post Track & Trace page.
Enter one supported number at a time.
Prefer the An Post tracking ID shown on the postage label or receipt.
Do not enter:
- an unrelated ecommerce order number;
- a
Trans Ref ID; - a customs reference;
- a Docket In Box reference;
- a locker PIN;
- a safe-spot address;
- a phone number;
- an email address;
- a recipient name;
- a payment reference;
- a claim number;
- a photograph or signature.
Treat the complete tracking number as private shipment data. Do not publish it in reviews, forums, screenshots, page titles, URLs, analytics labels or unnecessary AI prompts.
What An Post is
An Post is an Irish State-owned designated activity company.
It provides universal postal services, parcel and packet delivery, post-office services, business logistics, retail services and government-service access. This page covers only the postal and parcel-tracking job.
Current regulatory evidence identifies An Post as Ireland’s designated universal postal service provider for a six-year period beginning on August 2, 2023. The present designation runs through August 2029.
universal postal service provider
≠ every item is tracked
≠ every item requires a signature
≠ every item has the same compensation
The sender’s purchased service controls the tracking and proof contract.
Which An Post services are tracked?
An Post offers several postal products with different evidence models.
Standard Post
Standard Post can have limited or no end-to-end tracking, depending on the purchased service and format. A letter carried by An Post is not automatically a tracked item.
Registered Post
Registered Post provides a posting receipt, Track & Trace identification, delivery evidence and product-specific compensation rules. The sender should keep the posting receipt.
Express Post
Ordinary Express provides tracking and delivery confirmation. It does not universally include a recipient signature.
Express with Signature
Express with Signature is a separate domestic product. It provides tracking and a signature or another An Post-approved delivery record.
International Insured service
An Post’s insured international packet service is not the same as Registered Post. Current terms describe destination-operator delivery confirmation without a universal recipient-signature requirement.
insured
≠ signed
Digital Stamp
Digital Stamp is not a tracked parcel product. A digital stamp code or notification should not be entered as a parcel tracking number.
An Post tracking-number format
Current An Post guidance describes a common domestic tracked identifier with:
- two letters;
- nine digits;
- the country suffix
IE.
Masked structure:
AA#########IE
This resembles the international postal S10 structure. The initial letters can relate to postal service families, but users should not rely on an unofficial prefix table to identify the exact product.
Does every An Post number end in `IE`?
No. The AA#########IE structure is useful for domestic An Post-issued tracked items. Other accepted records can include foreign postal identifiers, selected customer references, selected order references and authenticated business records.
domestic An Post family
→ commonly ends in IE
≠ every valid An Post-related input ends in IE
Do not reject a verified inbound foreign identifier merely because it does not end in IE.
Tracking ID, customer reference and order reference
| Reference | What it identifies | Tracking use |
|---|---|---|
| An Post Track & Trace ID | Postal item | Preferred public input |
| Foreign postal identifier | International item | Useful before or after handoff |
| Customer reference | Sender-defined linked record | Supported only in selected official systems |
| Order reference | Commercial or ecommerce order | Supported only when officially linked |
Trans Ref ID | Transaction record | Not the tracking number |
| Customs reference | Import-charge workflow | Not a parcel tracking number |
| DIB reference | Missed-delivery notice | Not the ordinary tracking ID |
| Locker PIN | Parcel-release credential | Never a tracking number |
An Post’s public tracker refers to tracking numbers and order numbers. That does not mean every retailer order number can be resolved. The safest input remains the carrier tracking ID.
`Trans Ref ID` is not an An Post tracking number
An Post explicitly distinguishes the Trans Ref ID from the Track & Trace number. A transaction reference can appear on a receipt, online transaction, payment confirmation or postage purchase.
transaction reference
≠ Track & Trace ID One order can contain several An Post items
A retailer or business system can create one commercial order with several labels, physical parcels and tracking IDs. Each item can have its own event history.
one ecommerce order
→ can contain several An Post items
one item Delivered
≠ every item in the order Delivered
When only part of an order arrives, compare every An Post identifier supplied by the sender.
Does An Post physically have the item?
| Evidence | Strongest supported conclusion | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Ecommerce order exists | Commercial purchase exists | Postal shipment or An Post custody |
| Label or postage record created | Electronic shipping record exists | Sender handoff |
| Sender shared item details | An Post received electronic pre-advice | Physical possession |
| Collection booked | Collection operation was requested | Collection completed |
| Post-office acceptance receipt | Acceptance was recorded | Network departure |
| Driver collection scan | Collection was recorded | Sorting or export |
| First An Post network scan | An Post processing exists | Current exact location |
| Outbound dispatch | Origin-post stage progressed | Destination-post receipt |
| Inbound An Post scan | Physical receipt in Ireland recorded | Customs release or delivery |
| Out for Delivery | Delivery-route activity exists | Completion |
| Delivered or collected | Completion event exists | Named-recipient and proof details |
Why can the status appear to move backwards?
An Post documents an important data-order edge case. The sender can physically hand over the item and transmit the electronic details afterwards. The public history can therefore show a stronger physical event and later display sender-data wording.
later pre-advice wording
≠ custody moved backwards
≠ item returned to sender
Compare event timestamps, raw event text, first physical acceptance and later processing scans.
Collection booked versus item collected
collection booked
→ pickup request exists
≠ postal operative arrived
≠ item was present
≠ item was collected
Wait for a collection scan, explicit acceptance, post-office receipt or first network event.
Stronger An Post acceptance evidence
Stronger possession evidence can include acceptance at a post office, a Registered Post receipt, a driver collection scan, the first processing scan or explicit “we have your item” wording.
label created
< sender details shared
< collection booked
< accepted or first An Post scan How An Post tracking updates
An Post says Track & Trace updates when the item is scanned as it moves through the network.
An Post tracking shows recorded logistics milestones. It is not continuous live GPS.
It does not show a live van position, exact depot shelf, continuous aircraft location, named postal operative or guaranteed time of the next scan.
No complete public An Post status dictionary
An Post does not publish one complete current raw-event code dictionary for every domestic, international, customs, safe-spot, redelivery and locker product. This page therefore explains evidence families rather than inventing a codebook.
Item being processed or sorted
A processing event can represent mail-centre handling, parcel-hub handling, routing, transfer or route preparation.
being sorted for delivery
→ destination processing exists
≠ Out for Delivery
≠ delivery guaranteed that day
Repeated sorting can reflect normal transfer, route correction, capacity, delayed data ingestion or a new delivery cycle. It does not automatically prove loss or misconduct.
Out for Delivery
Out for Delivery means An Post recorded delivery-route activity.
Out for Delivery
→ item assigned to a delivery route
≠ live van location
≠ exact arrival time
≠ guaranteed same-day completion
A later branch can include safe spot, Delivered, DIB, route delay or return to the delivery office.
Outbound international tracking
For an outbound item, An Post is the origin postal operator.
An Post acceptance
→ Irish processing
→ export dispatch
→ international transport
→ destination postal operator
→ destination customs
→ local delivery
Once the item leaves An Post or Ireland, the destination postal operator can become the strongest source for local events.
`Item has left An Post`
Strongest supported conclusion:
The origin-post stage progressed and the item was dispatched onward.
It does not prove destination-post acceptance, destination customs clearance or local delivery.
Inbound international tracking
For an inbound item:
origin postal operator
→ export
→ international transport
→ physical An Post receipt and scan
→ Irish customs where applicable
→ An Post delivery
An Post says an inbound item appears in its tracking after physical receipt and scan. Before that point, use origin-post tracking and international dispatch evidence.
Foreign tracker says the item is in Ireland
A foreign postal operator can show wording such as “in Ireland,” “arrived in destination country” or “destination arrival” before An Post has physically received the item.
Possible explanations include predictive wording, a dispatch manifest, airline handling, a transit facility, customs pre-advice or data timing.
foreign tracker says “Ireland”
≠ An Post physically has the item
The first An Post scan is stronger local possession evidence.
Why international tracking may stop after export
The destination postal operator controls local event depth. Some operators provide arrival, customs, delivery and signature events. Others return fewer events to An Post.
A gap after export does not automatically prove loss. Use the destination operator when it is identified.
International Registered Post
Registered Post can provide tracked evidence, but international visibility depends on the destination postal operator.
Possible evidence includes:
- posting receipt;
- An Post export history;
- destination-post history;
- destination signature where available.
The signature may not appear publicly in An Post tracking. An Post Customer Services may need to obtain it from the destination operator.
Partner-post event source
Preserve An Post, the foreign postal operator, customs authority and raw event source separately.
same international item
≠ one carrier generated every event
Do not silently attribute a foreign-post event to An Post.
My Deliveries
My Deliveries is An Post’s authenticated delivery-management service. It can support matched tracked items, safe-spot preferences, delivery management, customs payment, returns and authenticated delivery photographs.
Item matching can depend on the email or phone number supplied by the sender.
11Tracking cannot access the user’s My Deliveries account.
What is an An Post safe spot?
A safe spot can be a dry location hidden from public view, a neighbour or another eligible backup delivery preference.
Eligibility depends on:
- product;
- sender restrictions;
- contact-data match;
- delivery stage;
- operational safety.
Saving a safe spot does not make every item eligible.
Registered Post and safe spots
Current An Post guidance excludes Registered Post from ordinary backup-safe-spot delivery because the product requires its own proof branch.
safe spot saved
≠ Registered item can be left there User-selected versus operative-selected safe place
Two distinct branches can exist.
User-selected safe spot
The user saved or selected a delivery preference.
Postal-operative safe place
An Post says that on occasion, a postal operative may leave an item in a safe place at the delivery address when they believe it is safe.
safe place used
≠ user necessarily selected it
Preserve the raw instruction source where available.
Safe-spot delivery photograph
For eligible safe-spot delivery, An Post can take a photograph, send an email notification and make the image available in the authenticated account.
Current guidance says the image remains available for seven calendar days.
11Tracking cannot retrieve it.
Is a safe-spot photo guaranteed?
No universal guarantee is confirmed. Official marketing presents the photo as an important benefit, while Help material uses qualified wording and provides support for missing or inaccessible images.
Eligible safe-spot deliveries generally include an authenticated photograph, but not every An Post delivery has a publicly available photo.
What does the delivery photo prove?
Strongest supported conclusion:
An Post recorded an image associated with the placement workflow.
It does not independently prove the named recipient personally received the item, the exact legal address, correct contents, condition, continued possession or absence of later theft.
Current business terms also recognize that a delivery photograph can contain other parcels. Treat it as private.
Delivered to safe spot but not received
Check the selected safe spot, another safe place at the address, neighbour, household members, mailbox, DeliveryBox, authenticated photograph, timestamp and exact raw delivery wording.
Then contact:
- An Post for delivery investigation;
- sender or retailer for the commercial remedy.
Preserve retailer or marketplace deadlines.
Delivered status branches
An An Post Delivered outcome can represent:
- recipient delivery;
- signature;
- another accepted proof method;
- safe spot;
- neighbour;
- mailbox;
- DeliveryBox;
- Parcel Locker collection;
- post-office collection;
- Delivery Service Unit collection;
- foreign postal-operator completion.
Do not flatten every branch into “Delivered to the named recipient.”
Delivered
→ completion event exists
≠ named recipient personally received
≠ correct contents
≠ undamaged condition
≠ continued possession Missed delivery and DIB
A “Sorry we missed you” notice is also called a Docket In Box or DIB.
DIB issued
→ collection or redelivery instructions exist
≠ parcel collected
≠ redelivery requested
The notice can identify the Delivery Service Unit or collection location.
No DIB notice
An Post guidance says an expected item without a DIB is most likely still in transit. That is practical guidance, not conclusive proof that no attempt occurred.
Check digital tracking, mailbox, safe place, neighbour, sender’s number and An Post support.
How many delivery attempts does An Post make?
An Post says it will attempt delivery to the address at least once.
That is not a universal promise of exactly one attempt, a second attempt, automatic redelivery or one outcome for every product.
Collecting from a Delivery Service Unit
For a missed item, collection can require:
- DIB notice;
- personal identification.
A Delivery Service Unit is an An Post operational site, not a separate carrier.
Can another person collect an An Post item?
An addressee can authorize another person under the applicable workflow.
Current guidance can require:
- addressee signs the DIB;
- authorized person brings the notice;
- authorized person brings their own ID.
agent collected
→ delegated release recorded
≠ named addressee personally collected Missed-delivery holding periods
Current generic guidance distinguishes:
| Item branch | Holding period |
|---|---|
| Standard Post or Express Post | 5 working days |
| Registered Post | 3 working days |
| Incoming international item | 16 working days |
These periods are not interchangeable. Use the deadline in the current notice.
What happens when the holding period expires?
holding deadline expired
→ return process may begin
≠ item already left the location
≠ sender received it
≠ retailer refund
An Post can attempt to return the item when a legible sender address exists. The later tracking history should confirm reverse movement.
An Post redelivery
Eligible missed items can be requested for redelivery to the original address or an alternative address in the Republic of Ireland.
Redelivery is a delivery-management request. It is not a new tracked parcel.
How long does An Post redelivery take?
Current Help guidance estimates approximately three to five working days.
Current redelivery terms do not guarantee an exact date, exact time or advance delivery notice.
redelivery requested
→ instruction submitted
≠ route accepted
≠ exact delivery date guaranteed Only one redelivery request
Current terms say only one redelivery request is allowed per item.
A failed or unusable redelivery branch can lead to collection or return to sender. 11Tracking cannot arrange another attempt.
Can redelivery go to an An Post Parcel Locker?
No. An Post separates missed-delivery redelivery from Parcel Locker redirection.
A redelivery request cannot target a Parcel Locker.
Customs charges before redelivery
An import item with unpaid customs charges cannot be released for redelivery.
redelivery request
+ customs unpaid
→ release remains blocked
Paying customs and arranging redelivery are separate actions.
Redelivery does not create new proof rights
The redelivery service itself does not create a separate tracking number, POD entitlement, insurance contract or compensation right.
The original postal product still controls the evidence and claim rules.
Alternative-address risk
A user can manually enter an alternative Irish address. An instruction confirmation does not prove the address is correct, the item is eligible, the route change succeeded or delivery completed.
An Post Parcel Lockers
Parcel Lockers are self-service units used for collection, sending and returns.
For an inbound eligible item, the delivery branch can include:
- locker option offered;
- locker selected;
- item transported to locker;
- item deposited;
- PIN issued;
- item collected.
Each stage is separate.
Redirected to Parcel Locker
locker selected
→ delivery preference recorded
≠ item deposited
≠ locker ready
Wait for a later deposit or PIN event.
Locker PIN issued
The PIN is a release credential.
PIN issued
→ locker collection credential exists
≠ parcel collected
Do not enter the PIN into a tracking form or share it publicly.
How long does an An Post Parcel Locker hold an item?
Current official workflow says:
- item remains in the locker for 48 hours;
- a reminder is sent before removal;
- an uncollected item moves to the delivery depot;
- the depot holds it for a further five days.
48-hour locker period expired
→ depot branch begins
≠ immediate Return to Sender Locker item moved to depot
After locker removal, collection can require photographic ID and the removal notice. The locker PIN may no longer be the operative release method.
Item too large for the locker
A selected item may not physically fit. An Post says an oversize item can be taken to the delivery depot and the recipient notified.
locker selected
≠ item fits the locker
This is not proof of loss.
Are all An Post lockers open 24/7?
No. Some lockers are available around the clock. Others depend on the opening hours of shopping centres, shops or managed premises.
AddressPal is not ordinary An Post tracking
AddressPal is An Post’s forwarding product using virtual addresses for selected overseas purchases. It can have an AP identifier, forwarding workflow and authenticated account.
An AddressPal identifier should not be treated as proof of the ordinary AA#########IE tracking family.
DeliveryBox is not a Parcel Locker
DeliveryBox is a physical receptacle installed at a home. It is not a carrier, Parcel Locker, tracking number or universal safe spot.
A DeliveryBox completion is a placement branch, not proof that the named person was present.
Proof of delivery depends on the product
There is no one universal An Post POD.
| Product or branch | Possible proof | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Standard tracked item | Scan or delivery confirmation | No universal signature |
| Registered Post | Signature or accepted delivery evidence | Receipt and product terms matter |
| Express | Delivery confirmation | Signature not universal |
| Express with Signature | Signature or approved evidence | Separate domestic product |
| International Registered | Destination-post signature where available | Not every destination exposes it online |
| International Insured | Destination-post delivery confirmation | Signature not required |
| Safe spot | Authenticated photograph | Not universal public POD |
| Parcel Locker | Locker or depot release record | PIN does not prove named person |
| DSU or post-office collection | ID or agent-release record | Not public by default |
An Post POD PDF
An Post tracking help says that where a delivered item has a signature available, a POD PDF can be requested or downloaded.
Availability depends on product, account, destination operator, proof type and processing.
11Tracking cannot retrieve private POD.
Registered Post proof and receipt
Registered Post provides a posting receipt with the Track & Trace ID. The sender should keep it because it can be required for a claim.
The recipient often does not possess the posting receipt, purchased-service contract or declared value. This is why the sender is usually the carrier claimant.
Express versus Express with Signature
Ordinary Express
Provides tracking and delivery confirmation. It does not guarantee a signature.
Express with Signature
Provides a signature or another An Post-approved delivery record. It is a separate domestic product.
Express
≠ Express with Signature International Insured Post proof
Current insured international terms distinguish the product from Registered Post.
The service can use destination-post delivery confirmation as proof without a signature.
insurance
≠ signature
delivery confirmation
≠ named-recipient signature Delivery-photo retention is not a claim deadline
The safe-spot photograph can be available for seven calendar days.
That is not the same as public tracking retention, POD retention, complaint deadline, carrier claim deadline or retailer dispute deadline.
Preserve the evidence promptly.
Irish Revenue versus An Post
Irish Revenue is the customs authority.
Revenue controls:
- legal assessment;
- duties and VAT;
- admissibility;
- customs release;
- customs refund rules.
An Post can:
- receive electronic customs data;
- act as a customs representative;
- communicate the charge;
- collect payment;
- hold the item;
- deliver or return it.
An Post customs event
≠ An Post is the customs authority Electronic customs data versus physical item
International goods require electronic advance customs data. The origin postal operator can transmit sender, recipient, contents, value, weight, origin and classification data before the item physically arrives.
customs data received
→ electronic declaration exists
≠ item physically arrived Can An Post correct the sender’s customs declaration?
Current An Post guidance says it cannot amend incomplete or inaccurate customs data supplied by the sender.
Possible outcomes include an information request, delay, return or prohibited-item handling.
The recipient can need to contact the sender or retailer.
Customs tracking number versus customs reference
An Post customs payment can require:
- Track & Trace number;
- customs reference.
These are distinct.
customs reference
≠ parcel tracking number
Keep the customs reference private.
Customs charge notification
An Post can communicate an import charge through postcard, SMS or email.
A notification can be genuine while an included link is still unsafe to trust without independent verification.
Open the An Post website or app independently.
How to pay An Post customs charges safely
Use the current official An Post channel. Depending on the workflow, payment can be available through the An Post website, app or post office.
An Post says it does not take customs payment by phone.
Do not share payment or customs details in a public tracking form.
Current 2026 customs charges
These are dated, high-volatility facts rather than permanent pricing.
An Post customs administration fee
Current An Post material says the administration fee changed to €6.95 from February 3, 2026.
Irish Revenue low-value customs duty
Irish Revenue introduced a €3 customs duty per distinct item from July 1, 2026 for most ecommerce parcels valued at €150 or less arriving from outside the EU.
Verify the current official pages before acting.
Customs hold after notice
Current An Post Customs Terms effective in June 2026 describe a maximum hold of ten working days after the Customs Charge Notification Card is sent.
If the charge is not paid, the item can be returned.
This is separate from missed-delivery holding periods.
Customs evidence ladder
| Event | Strongest supported conclusion | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Advance customs data | Electronic declaration exists | Physical arrival |
| Physical An Post receipt | Postal custody in Ireland exists | Customs release |
| Customs information required | Data or classification issue exists | Final assessment |
| Customs charge raised | Assessment/payment workflow exists | Message authenticity |
| Customs paid | Payment submitted or recorded | Release |
| Customs released | Legal customs stage progressed | Destination sorting |
| An Post processing after release | Postal movement resumed | Out for Delivery |
| Out for Delivery | Route activity exists | Completion |
Customs paid but tracking is not updating
Possible stages after payment include payment processing, Revenue release, release-data transfer, An Post custody transition, sorting and route preparation.
First actions:
- verify payment in the official An Post channel;
- keep the customs reference private;
- check for a release event;
- contact An Post customs support if the official history remains stale.
customs paid
≠ customs released
≠ Out for Delivery Customs returned to sender
An item can be returned because of unpaid charges, incomplete data, inaccurate declaration, prohibited or restricted contents or another customs problem.
customs return
→ reverse postal movement
≠ retailer refund
≠ customs refund
Contact the sender or retailer for the commercial remedy.
Why An Post tracking may not update
Interpret the gap from the last confirmed stage.
Sender shared details only
The sender or retailer still owns the first action.
Collection booked
The collection may not have completed.
An Post accepted item
An Post controls the next processing event.
Item left Ireland
Use the destination postal operator.
Foreign tracker says Ireland, no An Post scan
The origin or international transport stage may still control.
Customs stage
Use the current customs event and official payment channel.
Out for Delivery
Wait for completion, DIB or safe-place outcome.
DIB or holding
Act before the item-specific deadline.
Redelivery requested
Wait for a later accepted route or delivery event.
Locker selected
Wait for deposit and PIN.
There is no one number of days after which every An Post gap proves loss.
Tracking number not found
Possible explanations include:
- wrong reference;
Trans Ref IDentered;- retailer order not linked;
- label created but not imported;
- foreign identifier not yet handed to An Post;
- typing error;
- untracked service.
Check the exact number, sender confirmation, purchased product, origin postal operator and first An Post scan.
Returned to sender
A return can follow holding expiry, failed redelivery, invalid address, refusal, customs non-payment, customs data problems, prohibited contents or another delivery exception.
returned to sender
→ reverse logistics completion
≠ refund
≠ replacement
The sender or retailer controls the commercial outcome.
Who should act?
| Current evidence | First responsible route |
|---|---|
| Merchant order but no An Post tracking ID | Sender or retailer |
| Sender shared details only | Sender or retailer |
| Collection booked but no acceptance | Sender and An Post collection support |
| An Post accepted item, no movement | An Post |
| Sorting or hub delay | An Post |
| Outbound item left Ireland | Destination postal operator |
| Foreign tracker says Ireland, no An Post scan | Origin postal operator |
| Inbound An Post receipt | An Post |
| Customs declaration problem | Sender or retailer plus An Post customs |
| Customs charge | Official An Post customs channel and Irish Revenue |
| Customs paid, no release | An Post customs support |
| Out for Delivery | An Post |
| Safe-spot delivery missing | Check photo and location, then An Post and retailer |
| DIB issued | Named DSU or redelivery workflow |
| Redelivery requested | An Post redelivery workflow |
| Parcel Locker redirect | An Post locker workflow |
| PIN issued | Locker collection workflow |
| Locker expired and moved to depot | Delivery depot |
| Delivered but not received | An Post investigation and retailer remedy |
| Registered or Express claim | Sender using receipt and product terms |
| Damaged ecommerce item | Preserve evidence and contact retailer or sender |
| Return to sender | Sender or retailer for refund or reshipment |
| Customer Service final rejection | Customer Advocate |
| Advocate process exhausted | ComReg where applicable |
Claims are product-specific
There is no one universal An Post claim deadline or compensation amount.
Relevant contracts include Standard Post, Registered Post, Express, Express with Signature, Insured Post, Non-USO packets and parcels, Click & Post, business account services and customs terms.
Before quoting a deadline, identify the product, route, sender profile, posting date, delivery or expected-delivery date and current terms.
Who files an An Post claim?
The sender usually has the posting receipt, carrier contract, purchased-service evidence, declared value and proof of posting.
The recipient can provide a non-receipt statement, photographs, packaging, damage evidence and delivery-dispute details.
For ecommerce, the recipient should protect retailer or marketplace deadlines while the sender handles the carrier claim.
Registered Post claim evidence
The Registered Post receipt contains the tracking ID and can be required for a claim.
The sender should retain the receipt, proof of value, item details and correspondence.
Express claims and compensation
Ordinary Express and Express with Signature have different proof and compensation contracts.
Do not assume every delay produces a refund, every Express item has contents compensation or both products use the same cap.
Non-USO business claims
Current business Non-USO terms can contain short deadlines, official forms, product-specific caps, exclusions and customer-only rights.
Do not apply a business parcel rule to an ordinary consumer Registered item.
Damage evidence
Preserve the outer packaging, inner packaging, item, photographs, posting receipt, proof of value, description and recipient statement.
Do not upload private evidence to a public tracker.
Complaint, claim and retailer remedy are different
Tracking enquiry
Asks where the item is or what an event means.
Service complaint
Challenges delay, delivery conduct, loss handling or customer service.
Carrier claim
Seeks compensation under the postal contract.
Retailer remedy
Seeks a refund, replacement or buyer protection.
An Post investigation
≠ carrier claim accepted
carrier claim
≠ retailer refund
return to sender
≠ commercial refund Customer Advocate
The Customer Advocate is an internal escalation after Customer Service procedures are exhausted and a final reply is issued.
Current guidance says an appeal should be made within 30 calendar days of the final decision.
The Advocate is not the first tracking contact.
ComReg escalation
After the An Post complaint process, ComReg can be an external escalation route under the applicable postal framework.
ComReg does not replace a retailer remedy, customs appeal, court process or current carrier tracking.
Public tracking privacy
An Post and international postal systems can process tracking IDs, sender and recipient data, addresses, email, phone, safe spots, neighbours, DIB records, locker PINs, delivery photographs, signatures, customs contents, values, classification, customs references, payments and claim evidence.
11Tracking should display only the information needed to understand and act on the item.
Sensitive information to keep private
Do not expose:
- full address;
- phone;
- email;
- safe spot;
- neighbour identity;
- DIB reference;
- locker PIN;
- customs reference;
- signature;
- POD PDF;
- delivery photograph;
- customs contents;
- HS or TARIC classification;
- value;
- payment information;
- claim evidence.
These fields should stay out of page metadata, JSON-LD, URLs, logs, analytics, cache keys, screenshots and public AI prompts.
Verify suspicious An Post messages
Common lures include customs charges, missed delivery, redelivery fees, address correction, locker PINs, safe-spot photographs, refunds and compensation.
real tracking number
≠ authentic message
real customs amount
≠ safe payment link
real DIB wording
≠ official redelivery page
real PIN format
≠ safe person to share it with
Safer verification:
- Open
anpost.comor the An Post app independently. - Enter the tracking number manually.
- For customs, enter the tracking and customs references only in the official channel.
- Do not pay by phone.
- Do not share a locker PIN or delivery credential.
Frequently asked questions
What does an An Post tracking number look like?
A common domestic tracked identifier uses two letters, nine digits and the suffix IE. Foreign and selected linked references can use other structures.
Does every An Post tracking number end in IE?
No. The IE suffix describes the common domestic family, not every inbound foreign or linked business reference.
Can I track an An Post parcel with an order number?
Only when the official An Post system links that order or customer reference. An unrelated retailer order number is not automatically trackable.
Is the Trans Ref ID the tracking number?
No. An Post explicitly distinguishes the transaction reference from the Track & Trace ID.
Is the customs reference the tracking number?
No. Customs payment can require both the parcel tracking ID and a separate customs reference.
Is a DIB reference the tracking number?
No. DIB belongs to the missed-delivery notice workflow.
Is the locker PIN the tracking number?
No. It is a sensitive release credential.
What does Sender Has Shared Details mean?
An Post received electronic pre-advice from the sender. It does not prove physical handover.
Why did tracking move from We Have Your Item back to Sender Shared Details?
The sender can transmit electronic data after physically handing over the item. Preserve the timestamps; this does not necessarily mean custody moved backwards.
Does Collection Booked mean An Post collected the item?
No. It confirms a collection request, not a completed collection.
What proves An Post has the item?
An acceptance receipt, collection scan, explicit custody event or first An Post network scan is stronger evidence.
Is An Post tracking live GPS?
No. It updates when scans and system milestones are recorded.
What does Being Sorted for Delivery mean?
An Post is processing the item for destination delivery. It is not yet the same as Out for Delivery.
Does Out for Delivery guarantee delivery today?
No. It records route activity. Delay, DIB or safe-place delivery can still follow.
Why does a foreign tracker say the parcel is in Ireland but An Post has no record?
The foreign event can represent predictive destination wording, dispatch or pre-advice. An Post says inbound tracking begins after physical receipt and scan.
Who tracks an An Post parcel after it leaves Ireland?
Use the destination postal operator for detailed local events where available.
Why did international Registered tracking stop after export?
Not every destination postal operator returns online events to An Post.
What is My Deliveries?
It is An Post’s authenticated service for delivery management, safe spots, customs, returns and delivery photographs.
Can 11Tracking access My Deliveries?
No.
Can every An Post item use a safe spot?
No. Eligibility depends on product, sender and delivery conditions. Registered Post has its own proof requirement.
Did the recipient always select the safe place?
No. An Post says a postal operative can occasionally choose a safe place at the delivery address.
Does every safe-spot delivery have a photo?
No universal guarantee is confirmed. Eligible safe-spot deliveries generally use an authenticated photograph.
